She decides herself in what way she will realize her motherly potency. Every woman has the potency of a mother because she represents that half of humanity capable of passing on life. The patriarchal ideal of independence does not comply to life, nor does the idea of endless progress and unlimited growth. We cannot free ourselves from the restrictions of our condition of life – they are a part of us and belong to the comprehensive logic of complex biological systems. The separation of those parts of life dealing with communication in form of participation and relationship, that is dependence in favour of abstract liberation has led to a life-denying culture and this might be the real reason for the inability to combine different parts of living. Feminine-matriarchal thinking substitutes the idea of “liberation by communication” instead of “liberation by separation”. In this idea the fact that human beings are “being born” – originat in a living organism – mother, earth mother, mother of all – are reason and responsibility to give highest esteem to the conditions connected herewith. The fact that all life is birthed by a mother, who gives life to the “born” to continue life, to live a life – that is the basis for all social, civil and cultural areas. To be tied to our origin – birthed by a mother, and connected with all that exists, that is called life – is the symbolic order of the mother. We want to affirm these terms of our existence and ask:
What is the implication of the fact that all life is birthed by a mother – for me, for society, for politics? How do existing matriarchal societies treat this fact? What would it imply should we restore the symbolic order of the mother? Would a general awareness of the feminine genealogy and the symbolic order of the mother lead to a paradicmatic change of our society? What would distinguish such a society?
In peoples such als the Minangkabau, the Mosuo, the Dagara, the Juchtecá, the Akan, the Cham, the Kabyle and many others mothers guide the fate and well being of all. For them Mother means identity, homeland, protection, safety, emotional and spiritual orientation because in their scale of values motherliness – meaning social engagement ranks first place – even for men.
